A Growing City

Greenville and Pitt County have emerged as the commercial, cultural, educational and medical hub of Eastern North Carolina. Greenville, the county seat, has grown into a thriving small metropolitan city of over 60,00 people; Pitt County has a total population of about 133,798. Greenville, Founded in the mid-1700s on the banks of the Tar River and originally known as Martinsborough, changed it's name in 1786 to honor the Revolutionary War hero Nathaniel Greene. The county, founded in 1760 under British Colonial government, got its name from statesman and orator William Pitt, Earl of Chatham.
