Melissa married Kirt Nichols, a native of Pitt County, in 1987 and they have enjoyed raising their four children in the community for over 30 years. She has two daughters, Lauren and Jenna, and two sons, Hunter and Dylan. Her oldest two children are married and one is working in education and the other in law enforcement in Pitt County. All of her children have attended or are attending college in the community. She enjoys spending time with her family, especially her 2 year old grandson, Owen.
